We’re livestreaming the whole night.
From 6.30pm on Thu May 17th, after everyone has had their sarnies and wine, we’ll be livestreaming the speakers. Simply hit LIVE on this website to watch the speakers and join in the chat via the #begoodbesocial hashtag on Twitter. Huge thanks once again to Beyongolia for working her video wizardry on our event. As well as the livestream we’re also lucky to have professional photographer Rich Dyson giving up his time to help out. The photos will be up on our Flickr group and the videos will be on our YouTube channel post-event.

2. Big Lottery Fund Scotland are hosting again
If you managed to secure a ticket get along for 6pm on the night to ensure you get at least a glass of wine! Things kick off at 6.30pm sharp. You’re looking out for 1 Atlantic Quay, the big building at the bottom of Robertson St.

3. You can talk to Blackbaud about all things fundraising & mobile
Our lovely sponsors, Blackbaud Europe, will be on hand to chat about your fundraising needs and how you can use mobile to good effect. They really know their stuff so have a chat with them on the night.

4. Our speakers are pretty damn impressive
We don’t mean to blow our own trumpet but the speakers for this event are good, very good. We’ve got Louise Mcdonald, Young Scot Chief Executive, talking about what it means to use social media as a CEO. John Popham is making the trip up from England to speak to us about using social media to connect national and gloabal audiences with hyperlocal events. In particular John will be dicussing his latest, Nominent Trust funded, project Celebration 2.0. Our third speaker is Ally Tibbitt, as well as his work with STV Local Allly is founder of Greener Leith – run by local volunteers the group is dedicated to making Leith greener in every sense. Ally will be sharing his experience of using social media to bring about real change at a local level. So yeah, a pretty bloody impressive lineup. You can pose your questions for our speakers during the panel Q&A at 8.30pm by tweeting using the #begoodbesocial hashtag.

5. #BeGoodBeSocial is an ongoing conversation
We like to think of Be Good Be Social as more than just an event – it’s an ongoing conversation. As pretentious as that sounds it’s true, people use the hashtag to ask third sector related social media questions all year round. That makes us very happy. So tweet away using the hashtag #BeGoodBeSocial on the night, share photos/videos, ask speakers questions and join in the debate – whether you’re there in person or sitting at home in your jammies.

Special guest blog post from Robert McAllen, Blackbaud Europe. Rob will be hosting a workshop on mobile giving at our upcoming Social Media for Social Good conference (26th April 2012). Conference tickets are now sold out but we’ll be releasing free tickets for #BeGoodBeSocial Glasgow (17th May 2012) this week.

There are many ways to fundraise via a mobile phone and more and more we are turning to a system that is easily accessible as well as gives far greater access to the donor. Mobile phones are always carried, almost always on, personal, have a built in payment channel and are importantly, interactive.

I’d like to take a look at some basic tools that people are using to make their donations more accessible to this medium.

1. SMS Text

The SMS text area has become far more useful in the past few years. The removal of VAT and charges from the Telco with the advent of the 70x codes has meant this is a far more accessible medium. A donor can donate to a number and give an instant gift. Despite the UK leading the way with these methods, it was actually within the US that this captured people’s attention. The Haiti disaster in 2008 raised an astonishing $39 million by text giving alone and it is estimated that some 95% of those giving had not given before. Here in the UK Comic Relief raised a staggering £15 million last year using text donations. The system seems to work and most charities are taking their first tentative steps with this completely new medium. Many are even looking at the next steps and examining the likes of totometers at gala events to encourage text giving.

2. Regular Giving

A recent addition to the SMS text system is the idea of giving a regular gift via this method. The UK has been a huge user of regular gifts via standing orders and direct debits, and it’s something that people are now very familiar with as billions are being raised every year. It’s more interactive when people have the ability to skip a month if necessary and stop whenever they please and it’s also incredibly easy to set up. Some organisations have now been authorised to take the full £10 mobile gift regularly from now on which is a big step by the regulators but a massive help to charities who want a cheap, easy way to fundraise and garner a regular income.

3.Events

Last year the UK raised something in the region of £500 million using Friend asking friends methods such as Just Giving, Virgin Money giving and Everyday Hero. Most of these(not all), rely on traditional credit card type giving which is great but perhaps not as good for the impulse type gift. Having a keyword on the runners top is a great way for people to give when watching the person in the marathon, for example. So a keyword which might be something like ‘Give Robert’ which is texted to 70004 makes it so easy to give, that spectators or passersby have the ability to help out too. Couple that with a dashboard where we can monitor this type of gift and we have a strong way for people to fundraise.

4. QR codes

The QR code is something that has really taken off in the past few years. These codes are most likely to be used by young males and get us to a demographic we might not have previously looked at. However, we might be getting it wrong in how to use them. We see OR codes all over the place, on billboards etc, but a recent Comscore piece of research stated that 57% of QR code scanning went on at home. So is it better to put them onto direct mail pieces? The same research stated that magazines/newspapers were the best format for this work. Now if we can get direct gifts from QR codes or even regular gifts then we’d be really getting a lot out of the new functionality. I have talked about these in my blog posting here.

5. Apps/mobile giving pages

The final area of my five is a little less focussed than the others. There are all sorts of giving apps out there. Some are generic such as Give on the Mobile whilst others are far more specific such as the excellent Brain Map App from the Alzheimer’s Society. There is yet to be a killer app built around this area which has had mass market appeal but I am sure it is coming.

So many tools for this work and we haven’t even touched on mobile ready web pages etc but it’d be great to hear if anyone else has seen any other examples they would like to share. Please let us know or bring them along on the day to the Social Media for Social Good event.

On the 1st March 2012, anti-bullying charity Beatbullying led the first ever global virtual march for children’s rights. Today Matt Collins from Beatbullying kindly explains more about this innovative digital campaign. Be Good Be Social will be running a Twitter Q&A with Matt on Friday 9th March between 1-2pm – more details on how to participate below.

To mark Anti-Bullying Week, Beatbullying led the first digital demonstration against bullying to the doors of No.10.

Thousands of children and adults created colourful avatars at www.beatbullying.org/bigmarch, spent time being educated and entertained in the virtual Big March Park, and set off across the websites of some the UK’s biggest corporates and charities to call on the UK government to protect children from bullying.

We then set ourselves the challenge of topping the Big March. The natural next step was to take the movement against bullying to the global stage. This time, we’re calling upon the United Nations to enshrine explicitly in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: “The right of every child to be safe from bullying, violence and the fear of violence by their peers as well as from abuse by adults.”

So thousands of cute little avatars, including ones for Stephen Fry, the cast of Hollyoaks, and Desmond Tutu, crossed the websites of MTV, Girlguiding UK, and other charities and corporates from all over the world. We’ve harnessed the incredible power of the internet to join bring children’s rights organisations from Canada, Australia and beyond together in the fight for children’s rights.

But the Big March 2012 isn’t a one off campaign for Beatbullying. The intention is not simply to harness the efforts of thousands of people worldwide in a short-term burst of activist activity, important as that focus is. Instead, the Big March 2012 is an expression of Beatbullying’s core values. Our services and our marketing focus is online. Our visual identity is colourful and engaging to young people. We build long lasting partnerships with other charities and corporates. And we take risks. The Big March 2012 encompasses of all of these things. It is an expression of who we are all year round.

Beatbullying doesn’t operate campaigns in isolation either. So if you sign up to the Big March 2012, you become a member of our collective of digital activists. You’ll have the opportunity to sign up to be a CyberMentor and be there for young people who are being bullied. You can be a Life Mentor, giving direction to young people at the crossroads of life. You can even run a marathon, and fund the support given by others.

All of these activities feed into our central mission – to keep children free from bullying, violence and the fear of violence. Every single person who signs up to the Big March 2012 gets the chance to join our movement against bullying at home, online, and in their communities, wherever they are.

Matt Collins, Head of Marketing @Beatbullying

If you’d like to know more about The Big March 2012 and how it worked, we’ll be running a Twitter Q&A session between 1-2pm on Friday 9th March. Tweet your questions for Matt now to @BeGoodBeSocial with the hashtag #BigMarch2012
